Frequently asked questions

Is a ZIP code the same as a ZCTA?
Not exactly. ZIP codes are mail delivery routes defined by the U.S. Postal Service and can change at any time. ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are the Census Bureau’s area approximations of ZIP codes, built from census blocks for the 2020 Census. Most residential ZIP codes have a matching ZCTA with the same five digits, but boundaries can differ, and ZIP codes used only for PO boxes or a single business usually have no ZCTA.
Where do the numbers on OpenZIP come from?
All statistics come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS) 2020–2024 5-year estimates, detailed tables. County and place names come from the Census Bureau’s 2020 ZCTA relationship files. OpenZIP is an independent site and is not endorsed or certified by the Census Bureau.
How current is the data?
The ACS 2020–2024 5-year estimates pool survey responses collected over those five years; dollar figures are adjusted to 2024 dollars. The Census Bureau releases a new 5-year edition once a year, typically in December or January. OpenZIP’s snapshot was taken Oct 26, 2026.
What does “estimate has a large margin of error” mean?
ACS figures are based on a sample, and every estimate comes with a 90% margin of error. OpenZIP flags an estimate when its coefficient of variation is above 30%, or when a rate’s margin of error is 10 percentage points or more. In this snapshot, 10,878 of 32,878 ZIP codes have at least one such flag on income, home value, rent, age or education — usually small ZIP codes with few survey responses.
Why is my ZIP code missing?
OpenZIP has pages for 32,878 ZCTAs. A ZIP code is missing if it has no ZCTA (for example, a PO box–only ZIP code), if the Census Bureau reports no residents there, or if most of its estimates were not published. Try a nearby ZIP code or browse by state.
Does OpenZIP rate or recommend neighborhoods?
No. OpenZIP shows Census statistics as published, with their margins of error. It does not rate places as good or bad, does not make recommendations based on who lives in an area, and does not rank ZIP codes by race or ethnicity.

How OpenZIP works

OpenZIP takes the Census Bureau's published ZIP Code Tabulation Area estimates, adds the main county and largest overlapping place from the 2020 relationship files, and builds one page per ZIP code. Rates such as the poverty rate and the share working from home are calculated from the detailed tables using the Census Bureau's formulas for derived estimates and their margins of error.
